PNW Pebble Multi-Tool – Review

Multitools come in all shapes and sizes these days, with all of them claiming to be the savior of trailside inconveniences. They range from a handful of basic tools to something that would put a Swiss Army knife to shame. The PNW Pebble Multi-Tool sits comfortably in the middle of these.

It’s fair to say that we have tested our fair share of multitools over the years here at Tyres and Soles. Some of them get a few rides in and then end up in the top drawer of the toolbox, while others become part of the essential ride tool kit.

I’m sure we can all recall the days of hydration packs chock full of every conceivable tool and bike part imaginable, a World Cup-worthy tool kit for a quick afternoon spin. Tubes, pumps, Allen key set, chain breaker, tyre levers, gear cable- and 3L of water. Just in case. Just in case. But at the end of the day, how many of those tools do we end up using? And what are the tools we just can’t live without?

PNW Pebble- The pint-sized multitool that is too convenient to leave behind.

In the quest to leave those days in the dark ages, tools and methods of carrying them have become more and more minimal. Backpacks and hydration packs are relegated to multiday epics as we find new ways to deal with the same old problems.

But at the end of the day, how many of those tools do we end up using? And what are the tools we just can’t live without? Well, PNW has now entered into the bike tool sector with their new Pebble Multi-Tool. So, what makes the Pebble special?

Another first for PNW. The Pebble is the first multitool in their product range.

PNW Pebble Multi-Tool – Features

Like most of the PNW products we have reviewed, there is a passion shown in the design. Although a very simple product, the Pebble gets all the PNW love that we have come to expect. The Pebble is one of the smallest multi-tools we’ve seen but features the most commonly used Allen and Torx keys, plus a very handy integrated ‘Dynaplug’ tool.

The Pebble is held together with 4 Allen key bolts that can be tightened or loosened if you need to adjust the stiffness of each tool when pivoting them out for use. This also makes it easy if you ever need to completely pull the Pebble apart for cleaning purposes. Available in a mouth-watering paint job available in a choice of colours; Blackout, Blood Orange, Golden Daze Bronze & Fruit Snacks (Purple).

The Pebble comes with an option to upgrade to a Dynaplug 5-pack version for only a few dollars more.

Tubeless has eliminated tubes, CO2 canisters have replaced pumps and multitools claim to consolidate the array of tools we once had bouncing around in the backpack. The ultimate goal is to fit all the essentials into a smaller and smaller package and PNW has certainly hit that goal with the Pebble.

On The Trails

The PNW team clearly spent some time looking at the bare essentials when designing the Pebble. They have not aimed to solve all trailside issues, rather, PNW has created a tool that is convenient enough to be with you on every ride and solve most of the common trailside issues.

PNW has created a slimline package that can fit into any pair of shorts, that little pocket in your hip pack that doesn’t seem to fit anything else, or squashed into the on-frame storage pocket with your favourite CO2 inflator. Yes, it really is that small.

The edges are perfectly rounded like a river pebble that has been rolling around in a Pacific Northwest River. There won’t be any snags or sharp edges pressing into your hands when using the Pebble. The individual tools are easy to pull out and start using, unlike some multi-tools where they can become stiff and difficult to prize out.

The Pebble has found a permanent place in the kit. It is so small, while still being totally usable. The form factor allows good leverage to loosen or tighten stubborn bolts and will slide into any odd pockets you might have. We have the additional 5 Dynaplugs, too.

The pebble has become the tool that doesn’t leave the hip pack. That way there is always a tool there when we need it. And we think that summarizes the place of this tool. It doesn’t feature everything that might tempt you to pull it out and leave it in the ‘shed’. The little pebble will get you out of trailside pickles and should always be your pack when you need it.
