Funn Ripper2 SPD pedals. Built to handle aggressive riding, these pedals offer a solid, reliable connection to your bike, keeping your movements smooth and controlled on every trail. Funn continues to push the boundaries of what high-quality mountain bike components can deliver.

When it comes to mountain biking, the connection between rider and bike is paramount. Pedals serve as the primary contact point, influencing control, comfort, and overall performance. The improved Ripper2 SPD pedals by FUNN are designed to enhance this connection, offering a blend of durability and precision for aggressive riders who prefer being clipped in.

If you’re wondering, the main updates from the original Ripper to the Ripper2 are:

  • Shape and feel: Slimmer, more concave, and lighter, with an emphasis on comfort and support.
  • Platform size: The Ripper2 features a smaller platform than the original Ripper, reducing weight for improved pedaling efficiency and versatile trail riding.
  • Pins: More removable pins (8 per side) for greater customization and grip.
  • Clipping in: Uses an “Angular Engagement System” (AES) that tilts the cleat mechanism for easier clipping, even in tough conditions.

In this review, we thought it would be interesting to talk about how the Ripper2 stacks up against the classic Mamba pedal. The Mamba has long been a staple for gravity riders, and with the Ripper2 now positioned as a pedal capable of handling even more aggressive trails than its predecessor, the gap between the Ripper2 and the Mamba is closing in.

FUNN Ripper2 – Key Features

The Ripper2 pedals have been developed to handle the demands of aggressive enduro and downhill riding while staying light enough for everyday trail use. They strike a perfect balance between toughness and efficiency, giving riders confident control on rough descents without feeling weighed down on long climbs or flowy singletrack.

Featuring a robust AL6061 CNC-machined outer cage and a forged main body, ensuring strength without unnecessary weight. The design has become slightly more concave than the original Ripper, providing a slimmer, more concave, and lighter version with an emphasis on comfort and support.

The CrMo axle is supported by a cartridge bearing and DU bushing, providing smooth rotation and longevity. With dimensions of 90mm width, 100mm length, and 17mm height, the pedals offer a substantial platform.

One standout feature is the Angular Engagement System, which tilts the SPD mechanism by 15 degrees. This design facilitates easier and more intuitive cleat entry, reducing the likelihood of missed engagements during dynamic riding situations. The pedals are compatible with SPD cleats, offering 18-degree release angles and 5 degrees of float, catering to riders who prefer a balance between security and movement. Oh, and let’s not forget the pins. The Ripper2 has 8 pins per side compared to the Ripper, which only has 4 per side. More pins = more grip!

Ripper2 pedals are easy to service with Funn’s rebuild kits, which include all bearings, bushings, and seals for long-lasting performance. The pedals feature the standard and expected tension adjustment screws, which allow you to easily adjust how hard it is to get in and out of the pedal.

Funn Ripper2 Vs the Original Mamba Pedal

While the differences between the original Ripper and the new Ripper2 are more about small refinements—slightly improved engagement, a few tweaks to the platform and pins—the gap between the Ripper2 and the classic DH Mamba pedal is much more pronounced. The Mamba’s wider platform, traditional SPD engagement, and heavier build make it feel like a completely different pedal, whereas the Ripper2 is sleeker, lighter, and engineered for a more responsive, modern riding experience.

The Mamba set the benchmark for rugged, wide-platform SPD pedals, while the Ripper2 takes that foundation and refines it with a more compact body, improved engagement, and a focus on smoother, more intuitive performance.

For anyone curious about how Funn has modernized one of their most popular pedals, the comparison is definitely worth a closer look.

The Mamba was all about size and stability, while the Ripper2 brings a sleeker shape, smoother engagement, and a more refined feel on the trail.

Platform Design and Size

The Ripper2 pedals feature a compact platform measuring 90mm in width and 100mm in length, with a height of 17mm. In contrast, the original Mamba pedals have a larger and thinner platform size of 101mm x 102mm x 13.4mm. Both pedals are suitable for aggressive riding, but if you prefer a large platform, the Mamba takes the win here, if more platform is your thing.

Pin Placement

The Ripper2 pedals feature more pins with a slightly different arrangement on the cage compared to the Mamba, offering improved grip and a more secure connection underfoot. The Ripper2 has 8 pins per side, with 5 up front and 3 at the rear of the cage. The Mamba in comparison only offers 4 pins per side, one on each corner of the cage. The Ripper2 takes the win here if more pins are your thing.

Cleat Engagement and Float

The Ripper2 pedals incorporate an Angular Engagement System that tilts the SPD mechanism by 15 degrees, facilitating easier and more intuitive cleat entry. They offer 18-degree release angles and 5 degrees of float, catering to riders who prefer a balance between security and movement.

The original Mamba pedals, on the other hand, provide a more traditional fixed SPD engagement but does offer a liberal amount of float, allowing for fine-tuned adjustment. Some riders have noted that the larger platform of the Mamba pedals can make it challenging to locate the cleat mechanism, especially when clipping in. The Ripper2 takes the win here in our opinion.

Weight and Maintenance

The Ripper2 pedals weigh approximately 505g per pair for the double-sided version, while the original Mamba pedals are slightly heavier at 570g per pair. Both pedals feature a CrMo axle with DU bushing and cartridge bearings for smooth rotation. The Mamba pedals include a Grease Renew System (GRS) for easy maintenance, allowing riders to inject grease without disassembling the pedal. The Ripper2 pedals do not have this feature, but they do have a fully serviceable kit. We think this is a draw.

Our thoughts…

The Ripper2 pedals feature a compact platform, improved cleat engagement, and a lightweight design for smooth, reliable performance. The original Mamba pedals have a larger platform, a traditional SPD setup, and weigh a bit more, plus they include the Grease Renew System for easy maintenance. Choosing between them comes down to your riding style, platform preference, and how much you value serviceable components. For us, we felt the Ripper2 took the win overall.

On The Trails

On the trail, the Funn Ripper2 pedals proved to be solid and dependable, handling aggressive enduro and downhill terrain with ease. The compact platform and precise cleat engagement gave a confident, connected feel underfoot, making technical climbs and rocky descents feel more controlled.

The grip from the pins was impressive, holding shoes firmly in place without feeling harsh or uncomfortable on longer rides. In fact, it was so impressive that we ended up removing some pins as we did experience issues with unclipping at one point. This can be due to the shoe pedal combo you have. We were riding in the Fox Union shoe and running one shim under the cleat. There are plenty of pins in the Ripper2, which makes fine-tuning your pin placement an upside and not a downside, in our opinion.

The pedals also performed well across varied trail conditions, from steep, loose descents to flowy singletrack sections, showing a balance of reliability and versatility. Overall, the Ripper2 delivered a responsive, smooth ride, making them a trustworthy choice for riders tackling demanding trails.

The platform size felt just right for gravity-oriented trails—big enough to offer support and stability, but not so large that it felt cumbersome on XC-style sections or flowy singletrack.

Conclusions

The Funn Ripper2 pedals are a strong choice for riders who need a pedal that can handle aggressive trails and take a beating. With a compact, durable platform, improved cleat engagement, and well-positioned pins for grip, they provide a secure and stable connection underfoot.

Lightweight yet tough, the Ripper2 balances performance and reliability, giving riders confidence to push technical lines while making clipping in and out smooth and effortless. Overall, the Ripper2 pedals have proven themselves to be highly durable, maintaining performance and integrity.
