Dynaplug Racer Pro Review

Anyone who’s moved to tubeless tyres has definitely been there. That hissing noise you never want to hear. You look down and among the spray of sealant and the rapidly deflating tyre, you hope that whatever it was that you just put through your tyre, it’s going to seal.

Enter Dynaplug, who won’t be a stranger to anyone who has run tubeless tyres, having had a few great products that really put polish to the basic “bacon strip” idea. Their new Racer Pro model however has upped the game as far as ease and speed.

The Dynaplug® Racer Pro improves upon the legendary Racer’s original design with Twin Tube™ technology. This allows you to store 4 pre-loaded plugs ready to go in a single tool. Snap-on caps protect plugs from dirt and damage. When you are ready to make a repair, just pop off a cap to deploy either a standard size plug (with wheel-friendly soft brass tip) or the aluminium Megaplug for mega-big punctures. If you need more plugs just unthread the Twin Tube™ and flip it around for more plugging action!

Machined in Chico California from US-made billet aluminium and stainless steel, the Racer Pro weighs 26g, only 2g more than the prior generation, yet delivers twice the puncture-defeating power!

Features

Opening the Racer Pro up you’re greeted with the “standard” plug on one end and the “mega” plug on the other, well set up for any quick plug you’ll need on the trail. Each of these is easily reversible and replaceable so you can have any combination you like pre-set, standard/standard, mega/mega, or standard/mega like the stock set up.

While it doesn’t come with the Micro-knife or hold spares like the original Pill, that’s a non-issue as you have 4 plugs pre-loaded and ready to roll. If you have more than 4 punctures in a race/ride, it just wasn’t meant to be that day.

On The Trails

This rider tends to go months and years or more without actually getting punctures on the trail. Most Sydney riding is rock and sand-based where we don’t have a lot of things to really let your day down. As such, I was originally planning on doing a sacrificial review on whatever tyre in the fleet got closest to replacement first.

Funny things can happen though when you least expect it and in this case, it was hilariously tragic as a few weeks after I received the Racer Pro, I heard the dreaded hiss on a ride. But of course, I realised as soon as I opened my tools stash (conveniently located on bike in this case) that I hadn’t actually packed the new gear.

This was never meant to be a comparative review, but it quickly turned into one as I still had my original Dynaplug Pro Pill in the bag. Colour me surprised when I discovered that after at least a year or more without any use, the pill threads were not excited to open. Not with gloves, not with bare hands, no amount of swearing and growling at it was going to magically open this pill.

So this reviewer was left with nothing but the ever reducing hiss as the air finally drained out, looking at the stick that was too big for sealant alone, that had decided to make its new home inside my tyre. The walk of shame that no one wants. The push back up. The ride back to the car deflated, figuratively AND literally.

Upon returning home, the new Racer Pro was put to good use on the stand. The tyre inflated, the end-cap removed, hole plugged and spun to seal. Quick, easy and if I hadn’t been such a dunce, I would have still been on the trail at the time.

Needless to say, it has now replaced the Pill in my regular carry items and, given the non-threaded nature of it, it will be ready to plug quickly the next time it is needed, which hopefully will not be for another year or two.
